The Montessori Method was created to help each child reach their maximum potential in life, and there are three solid components that constitute this purpose: the importance of the role of the adults, a prepared environment, and a full understanding of child development through keen observation.
Dr. Montessori’s purpose was to set an environment that was different and dynamic where all components interact with each other. The child, the adult, and the environment all balance each other and work together. Whereas in a traditional learning environment, the adult is the biggest and only influence for the children. Dr. Montessori believed the adult should prepare themselves by being intellectually, physically, and emotionally healthy to work with children.
The adult must strategically prepare the environment with providing elements the child can use to develop through his senses such as touch, smell, hearing, and tasting. These elements greatly affect the child’s emotional, mental, and physical well-being. The learning environment should be beautiful with materials that are purposeful and promote functional independence. Once the adult links the child to the environment, they will feel a sense of security and freedom to work naturally and independently.
We know that children learn through experience and Dr. Montessori’s vision was that everyone one can grow through their own will becoming more independent with guidance from humble and committed adults. She believed this was the path to creating a peaceful world.
